2. Adobe Substance 3D Sampler: best for deeper material authoring

Substance 3D Sampler makes more sense when generation is only the beginning of the material workflow.

Adobe's generative tools can create tileable textures from text prompts and reference images. Those results can then move through Sampler's broader material creation tools, including image-to-material workflows, filters and further adjustments.

That gives it a different role from twirl. If we need a material quickly from a description, a lighter prompt-to-PBR workflow makes sense. If we're going to spend significant time manipulating and controlling the material afterward, Substance gives us considerably more room.

For environment artists already using the Substance ecosystem, that's a strong reason to keep more of the authoring process there.

3. Meshy: better when you need to texture a model

There is an important difference between generating a material and texturing a model.

Meshy leans more heavily into the second problem. Its texturing workflow can generate PBR textures around an existing model and its UVs, which makes it useful for props, furniture and other environment assets where the texture needs to understand the mesh.

Meshy also supports seamless PBR texture workflows, so there is some overlap.

For large environment surfaces, though, the material is often independent of any single mesh. A concrete texture might be reused across dozens of modular pieces, while a ground material can cover a much larger area.

What about Poly Haven and traditional PBR libraries?

AI generation isn't automatically better than downloading an existing material.

Poly Haven provides free CC0 photoscanned PBR materials. If it already has exactly the piece of stone, dirt or concrete we need, downloading that material is a perfectly sensible workflow.
