Best Free PBR Texture Sites in 2026 (and What Their Licenses Actually Allow)

November 5, 2026·twirl

We compare the free PBR texture sites 3D artists use most, including what each one is good for and what its license allows in commercial work.

There are plenty of free PBR textures online. The harder part is working out which site has the surface you need, whether the download includes every map, and whether the license covers what you plan to do with it.

If you want the short version, start with Poly Haven or ambientCG for common real-world surfaces. Both use CC0, which keeps licensing simple. If the surface you need does not exist, twirl can generate one from a prompt.

We make twirl, so weigh our opinion of it accordingly. We use the same test for every site here: does it have the material, is the map set complete, and can you use it without a licensing surprise later?

What to check before you download a free texture

A texture can look great on a preview sphere and still cause problems in a project. We check four things first.

  • License. Free to download does not always mean free to use however you like. Commercial use, redistribution, and bundling can all have different rules.
  • Maps. A usable set normally includes color, normal, and roughness. Height helps with brick, stone, and other surfaces with real depth. If you are not sure what each one does, start with what PBR maps actually are.
  • Resolution. Background walls can get away with less than a floor close to the camera. Our guide to 1K vs 2K vs 4K PBR textures covers how to choose.
  • Tiling. Repeat the texture across a large plane before committing to it. A seam or one obvious stain can show up quickly at scale.

1. twirl: free materials, plus a generator for what's missing

twirl has a public library of generated PBR materials that you can download without an account. Each completed material can include albedo, normal, roughness, metallic, and height maps. You can browse categories such as concrete, wood, stone, and metal.

The library is much smaller than the scan libraries below, so we would not treat it as a replacement for them. Its main advantage is what happens when your search comes up empty. You can describe the surface and generate a new material with the AI material generator, then bring it into Blender with one-click import.

Generated materials can be used commercially on every plan, subject to our terms of service.

Best for: Specific surfaces that are not in a scan library.

2. Poly Haven: the first stop for CC0 scans

Poly Haven is where we would look first for common real-world surfaces such as brick, wood, rock, and plaster. It also has HDRIs and 3D models, so you can often find several parts of a scene in one place.

Its license page says assets are CC0. Attribution is not required, and you can use them for any purpose, including in products you sell. The CC0 license covers the assets themselves, not site content such as logos, example renders, and text.

Best for: High-quality scans with the simplest possible license.

3. ambientCG: a large CC0 library for everyday surfaces

ambientCG is a strong second stop when Poly Haven does not have what you need. It works well for filling out a scene with concrete, metal, fabric, and other everyday materials.

The ambientCG license applies CC0 1.0 to its assets, including preview renders. Attribution is optional, commercial use is allowed, and the license page specifically says raw files can be included in projects such as video games.

Best for: Broad coverage, and games that need to ship the texture files.

4. ShareTextures: free, but read the license

ShareTextures is a useful library, but it is often listed as plain CC0, and that is not quite right.

Its license page describes a custom CC0-based license with added restrictions. Personal, educational, and commercial projects are all allowed, and attribution is not required. But you cannot redistribute assets on other sites or in collections or plugins without written permission, and automated downloads and direct-download integrations in third-party apps such as Blender add-ons are not allowed.

For a client render or a game, that may not matter at all. If you are building an add-on or an asset pack, it matters a lot.

Best for: Regular project work where you are not redistributing the assets.

5. Poliigon: a free selection from a paid library

Poliigon is primarily a paid library, but it does offer free assets. The Poliigon license lets anyone use those on personal or commercial projects.

The general restrictions still apply, and they are much tighter than CC0. You cannot share or repackage assets, including baked textures or scene files that make them easy to extract. They also cannot be used in game mods, maps, add-ons, open-source work, or AI and machine learning models.

Best for: Commercial renders where the assets stay inside your own project.

6. 3dtextures.me and cgbookcase: smaller shelves worth checking

3dtextures.me and cgbookcase are smaller libraries that can be handy when the bigger sites do not have the right variation. Quality and map coverage vary more from one texture to the next, so check each download before relying on it. Read each site's current license terms before using its textures in commercial work too.

Best for: One more variation when the larger libraries come up short.

Which free texture site should you use?

For a personal Blender project, Poly Haven and ambientCG will cover most of what you need.

For a game, ambientCG's license is especially clear about including raw files in a project. Poly Haven's CC0 license also allows the assets to be used in products you sell. Be more careful with restricted licenses if players can access or extract the files.

For an add-on, a plugin, or an asset pack, stick with CC0 sources and keep a record of where each file came from.

For client work, we would use any of the sites above after checking the terms. If the brief calls for an exact surface that nobody has scanned, generate it or edit a close match. Our guide to custom PBR materials for archviz in Blender goes deeper on that workflow, and our list of PBR material libraries for archviz includes paid options.

How to use free PBR textures in Blender

Once you have downloaded a set, the setup is similar no matter which site it came from.

  1. Add a material to your object.
  2. Use Node Wrangler's Principled Texture Setup to load all the maps at once.
  3. Make sure data maps such as normal and roughness use Non-Color. Our PBR texture color space guide lists the right setting for each one.
  4. If the lighting on the surface looks inverted, check whether the normal map is OpenGL or DirectX.
  5. Adjust the mapping scale until the surface matches its real-world size.

FAQ: free PBR textures

Can I use free PBR textures commercially?

Often, yes. Poly Haven, ambientCG, ShareTextures, and Poliigon's free assets all allow commercial projects, but their restrictions are different. Commercial use and redistribution are separate questions, so check both.

What does CC0 mean for textures?

CC0 is a way of giving up copyright as far as the law allows. In practice, you can use, modify, and sell work that includes the asset without giving credit. Check that the specific file you downloaded is actually covered, since some sites use modified versions of CC0.

Which site has the best free textures for Blender?

We would start with Poly Haven for quality scans and ambientCG for broader coverage. If neither has the surface you need, try a public twirl material or generate a new one.

Can I include free textures in a Blender add-on?

Only if the license allows it. CC0 assets are the safest place to start. ShareTextures requires written permission for redistribution in plugins, and Poliigon does not allow its assets in add-ons under its general restrictions.
